If you haven't completed an education in cosmetology then could you charge under 30? (Let's say 25) or could you still stick to at least 30

+Mashal Ahmed I wouldn't charge under 30. I have never been to cosmetology school. I have had training but a lot of MUA's are self-taught so I'd wait till your confident with you skills enough to charge more than 30! People may not take you seriously if you charge so little yanno?

Question; do you charge differently if you use drugstore products vs high end??

I used to charge 15$, but it really made me grow, also, I just did it to my closest college/high school friends and used very basic drugstore products mostly and very unexpensive brushes, besides, they came to my home so no traveling expenses either. It made me grow because they knew they wouldnt spend 50-70$ in a salon with me, and the drugstore products that I used were amazing quality. Now, I am able to purchase much more expensive products so I charge 30-45$. I think it´s a good plan, but I´m afraid if I keep escalating my prices I´ll lose my clients.

My niece, an administrator at a high school has talked me into doing prom makeup at her school in May 2016. I have decided it will be a 30 minute makeup for $20. Reason being, these are high school kids and $20 is doable. It will be my first paying gig, and I do feel uncomfortable charging a lot. I'm so happy to find your channel. I think my professional kit will be the Morphe 35 eyeshadow palettes. Morphe also has foundation, concealer, lip and contour palettes. I like my Morphe eyeshadow palettes so I hope their other products are good. But I will test them on my niece or daughter before prom. Anyway thanks for all the tips.

Hello Julia, growing with your business is good advice. I have been a MUA for over 20 years, celebrating 22 years this year. You definitely learn from your mistakes and from a good mentor willing to teach you . It is good for most baby artists to assist other senior artists in getting more experience. I saw someone mention safety while going to a job, which is very important. I write a beauty blog in mentioning that and other makeup artist info. Your welcome to check out my blog to read what I wrote for artists out there in job safety. http://www.purejoymakeup.blogspot.com
Have a great, blessed day and keep working hard!! 🙂

I always wanted to do freelance makeup. I've done makeup for family but I am just so self conscious and I get scared and nervous that the fear ends up making me talk myself out of trying to expand outside family

Nice! But what do you charge for commercials, photoshoots or events. where your working hours also depend on the duration of the (film)shoot or event. So do you charge a fixed price or charge per hour?

I am a Self taught MUA I started off doing free makeup on my friend and now been doing it for a while most of the make I use is high end makeup I always tell the person to bring their own foudation and evrything else I could provide. how much should I charge ? I charge 25 because I don't provide the foudation and other Self taught MUA around area charge 20-25. I haven invested a lot of money on my collection and I'm looking into foudation but idk what foudation to use since everyone has different skin types, tones. for right now I'm not providing the foudation but will provide everything else including lashes how much should I charge ?

I like the fact that besides the good advices, you are actually mentioning certain amount, there are MUAs out there that are like afraid of saying their price, it's crazy, like, if I was a client and wanted your services you would just tell me but I'm a follower who needs the advice and they keep avoiding the topic. Thank you for being clear on that.I really appreciate that, I will be a beginner in a few weeks and I'm still thinking if $35 or $40 would be okay because where I live the most requested mua charges $50 and uses good makeup, has good skills and a trajectory, but I'm 100% confident of my skills and will be using drugstore and high-end products as well, but I'm not known for being an Mua. I think he is cheap, even tho he is good

Definitely! I am mobile and travel for free within 30 mins my home, once its past that I charge $1 per km to cover travel costs. On average a makeup kit with higher end brands like mine, will average the product cost per client to be about $30-40 for just the products used depending if lashes are used as well. If I were starting out and still studying makeup I would just be happy covering my product fee. Once you graduate and are fully qualified you want to be worth it but not too pricey. I charge less if the client doesn't want lashes included but most the time they will as they are hiring you for some special occasion! Don't negotiate your prices once you have the skills and experience, people from certain companies or brands may want to try and lower your prices but then they are just not respecting you. Also the future is cruelty free and vegan so make sure to stock as many cruelty free brands as you can and don't support drug store brands. Most of my clients want to support that just because of that reason!

I honestly believe you should charge a client for traveling even if they are 5 minutes away because your packing a kit and unpacking after words how is that "absurd"
